Project Overview

In August 2016, Maharashtra awoke to one of the most disastrous and unfortunate accidents in its history. The Savitri river bridge built in the British era had collapsed due to heavy rains in the Mahad area, washing away buses, vehicles, and people.

Even as we grappled with this difficult situation, the Maharashtra government was under pressure to build a new bridge to restart the Mumbai-Goa highway for the bridge had been the chief means of connecting the region to the highway and saw heavy traffic every day.

At such a critical juncture, Dhruv Consultancy Services took up the responsibility of reconstructing a safe, secure, and strong bridge, within record time.

Accordingly, we provided consultancy services as Authority Engineer for Supervision of Construction of the 3-lane high-level major bridge at km 129/400 across the Savitri River.

In addition, we also constructed approaches in Cement Concrete Pavement on the Panvel-Mahad-Panji Road NH-66(Old-NH-17), on EPC mode of Contract near Mahad in Raigad District in the state of Maharashtra.

The most daunting aspect of this project was that we were expected to build the bridge within 6 months, whereas the standard time taken to build a bridge of that length is over 30 months. However, not only did we complete the project in record time, but in fact, finished it 15 days prior to the expected deadline!

The Maharashtra Government recognized Dhruv Consultancy’s this superhuman effort and we were awarded a Certificate of Appreciation at the hands Mr. Nitin Gadkari then the Minister of Road Transport and Highways.

Challenges Faced in Project Implementation

The biggest challenge of the project was that the time period allotted for completion of the project was 6 months, whereas as per the guidelines of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, a bridge of 100m length requires a minimum of 30 months for construction.

With strict deadlines and dedicated effort, we successfully completed the project on 14th June 2017, 15 days ahead of the expected date of completion on 31st May 2017.

Social Impact of the Project

The Panvel-Mahad-Panjim National Highway No. 66 (Erstwhile-17) is an important highway that connects Mumbai to Goa and further to the southern states of the country.

It is one of the busiest National Highways in India.

On this highway, near Mahad (Ch. 129/400), a Masonry Arch bridge with a carriageway width of 6 m having a length of 184 m. was constructed in 1928.

Due to continuous and heavy rainfall of 2-3 days in August 2016 in the catchment areas of the Savitri river, central spans of the masonry arch bridge washed away on August 02, 2016, during the late hours of midnight.

There was an existing two-lane R.C.C. arch bridge on the upstream side of this masonry arch bridge which was used for both-way traffic in the interval.

However, the construction of this bridge in a short span of 6 months brought normalcy to the traffic in the region.
